The Avant-Garde Art of Nukus

One of Uzbekistan’s most unique museum collections is housed in the Savitsky Karakalpakstan Art Museum in Nukus. This museum is world-famous for its collection of Soviet avant-garde art, much of which was banned during the Stalinist era.

The collection includes paintings, sculptures, and sketches by underground artists who defied Soviet artistic norms. These artists experimented with bold colors, abstract forms, and surrealist imagery, creating works that stood in contrast to the rigid Socialist Realism imposed by the Soviet authorities.

Among the highlights are works by Igor Savitsky, the museum’s founder, who devoted his life to preserving these hidden artistic treasures. The museum also displays traditional Karakalpak crafts, textiles, and jewelry, providing insight into the region’s unique cultural identity.
